About the test

What is Lipid Profile?

Important

Reference ranges and preparation can vary between laboratories and test combinations. Use the instructions and reference interval supplied for your own test order.

A lipid profile is a group of blood measurements that commonly includes total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. Whether a fasting sample is preferred depends on the reason for testing and the instructions from the clinician or laboratory.

A lipid profile measures blood fats used to estimate cardiovascular risk and guide prevention or treatment. It usually includes total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides; LDL cholesterol may be measured directly or calculated. Non-HDL cholesterol can also be useful because it captures cholesterol carried by several atherogenic particles.

The result is not interpreted as a simple ‘normal or abnormal’ panel. LDL goals depend on the person’s overall cardiovascular risk and history. For someone with known cardiovascular disease or high risk, a clinician may use a substantially lower LDL target than the general population reference. Triglycerides and HDL also add context.

The most useful interpretation of a lipid profile is risk based. Someone with previous heart attack, stroke, diabetes or other high-risk features may have an LDL treatment target much lower than the value considered acceptable for a lower-risk adult. HDL is generally interpreted as one part of the overall pattern rather than a number that cancels out high LDL. Triglycerides are particularly sensitive to recent food and alcohol intake. When triglycerides are very high, the clinician may request a fasting repeat or use an alternative way to assess LDL and non-HDL cholesterol.

What it measures

Common markers included

Total cholesterolOverall cholesterol measurement.
HDL cholesterolHigh-density lipoprotein cholesterol.
LDL cholesterolLow-density lipoprotein cholesterol; may be calculated or measured.
TriglyceridesA type of blood fat included in the profile.
Why it may be requested

Why might this test be requested?

A lipid profile may be requested as part of cardiovascular risk assessment or to monitor lipid-lowering treatment. The importance of each value depends on the person's overall risk profile rather than the cholesterol result alone.

Understanding results

How are the results interpreted?

A lipid profile is used mainly for cardiovascular-risk assessment rather than to diagnose symptoms. Total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides are interpreted together with age, blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, family history and existing cardiovascular disease. A general LDL value below 100 mg/dL is often considered desirable, but people at higher cardiovascular risk may be given substantially lower treatment targets.

Triglycerides can rise after food intake, alcohol use, uncontrolled glucose or some medicines. Non-HDL cholesterol and calculated LDL may also be reported and can add context depending on the laboratory.

Common values and expected results

Use your own lab report first

These are common adult categories and general targets. Cardiovascular treatment targets depend on the person's overall risk, existing disease and clinician guidance; the values printed on the laboratory report may use different categories.

MeasurementTypical valueContext
Total cholesterol<200 mg/dLGenerally desirable.
LDL cholesterol<100 mg/dLCommon general target; lower targets may be used for higher-risk people.
HDL cholesterol — men>40 mg/dLHigher is generally better.
HDL cholesterol — women>50 mg/dLHigher is generally better.
Triglycerides<150 mg/dLCommon healthy adult category.
Result context

What can affect the result?

Recent meals and alcohol

Triglycerides are particularly sensitive to recent intake; fasting may be requested in selected situations.

Thyroid, kidney and metabolic conditions

Several health conditions can change the lipid pattern.

Medicines

Statins and many other medicines can substantially alter cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

Important context

What this test cannot tell you on its own

There is no single cholesterol number that determines an individual's cardiovascular risk or need for treatment. A 'normal' LDL does not eliminate risk, and an elevated result does not by itself define the treatment plan. Fasting requirements vary by clinical purpose, and very high triglycerides can make some calculated LDL methods less reliable.

Collection notes

A venous blood sample is used. Many lipid profiles can now be performed without fasting, but fasting may still be requested when triglycerides are the main concern or by the ordering clinician. Follow the instructions for the specific order rather than assuming.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Not always. Many lipid profiles can be measured without fasting, but a fasting sample may be requested in selected situations, especially when triglycerides need clarification.

LDL is a major treatment target, but overall risk, HDL, triglycerides, non-HDL cholesterol and medical history also matter.

Higher HDL is generally associated with lower risk, but cardiovascular assessment should not rely on HDL alone and very high values are not automatically protective.

People with established cardiovascular disease, diabetes or other high-risk features may be given lower LDL targets than the general population.

It is total cholesterol minus HDL cholesterol and represents cholesterol carried by LDL and other atherogenic particles.

Yes for eligible bookings. Confirm whether the requesting clinician wants a fasting sample before the home visit.
