About the test

What is Uric Acid?

Important

Reference ranges and preparation can vary between laboratories and test combinations. Use the instructions and reference interval supplied for your own test order.

Uric acid is produced when the body breaks down purines. Blood uric acid can be requested in situations such as gout assessment, kidney-stone evaluation or treatment monitoring. A result should be interpreted alongside symptoms, medicines, diet and kidney function.

Uric acid is produced when the body breaks down purines. Most uric acid circulates in blood, is filtered by the kidneys and leaves the body in urine. When serum urate remains high, crystals can form in joints or urinary stones in some people, but many people with an elevated value never develop gout.

A blood uric-acid result therefore supports clinical assessment rather than diagnosing gout by itself. During an acute gout attack the serum level can occasionally be misleading, and definitive diagnosis may involve examination of joint fluid for crystals when clinically appropriate.

For people with established gout who are receiving urate-lowering treatment, clinicians often monitor serum urate over time rather than relying on symptoms alone. The treatment target can be below the laboratory’s general reference interval, especially when recurrent attacks or tophi are present, so the printed population range should not be mistaken for a treatment goal. Kidney function is relevant because it affects urate handling and medicine choice. If kidney stones are the concern, stone analysis or urine studies may answer questions that a serum uric-acid result cannot.

Why it may be requested

Why might this test be requested?

Uric acid may be requested when gout is being considered or monitored, when kidney stones are being evaluated, or in selected metabolic and treatment-monitoring situations. A high level alone does not diagnose gout.

Understanding results

How are the results interpreted?

Serum uric acid (urate) is interpreted together with symptoms and the reason for testing. A high value can increase the likelihood of urate crystal formation, but many people with hyperuricaemia never develop gout. Conversely, a serum urate result can occasionally be within the laboratory range during an acute gout flare. Kidney function, medicines, alcohol intake, diet and recent illness can all affect the level.

When urate is monitored during gout treatment, the clinician may use a treatment target that is lower than the laboratory's general population reference interval. The correct target is therefore not necessarily the same as the printed 'normal range'.

Typical reference values

Common values and expected results

Use your own lab report first

These are common adult examples for orientation only. The reference interval printed on the patient's own laboratory report takes priority because methods, units, age, sex, pregnancy and clinical context can change the expected range.

Adult females2.7–6.1 mg/dLMayo Clinic Laboratories adult reference interval.
Result context

What can affect the result?

Diet and alcohol

Purine-rich foods and alcohol can influence uric acid in susceptible people.

Kidney function and hydration

Reduced excretion and dehydration can increase serum urate.

Medicines

Diuretics and urate-lowering medicines are among drugs that can substantially affect the result.

Important context

What this test cannot tell you on its own

A blood uric-acid level cannot confirm gout on its own and does not show whether crystals are present in a joint. Joint-fluid crystal analysis may be used when the diagnosis is uncertain. A result also does not identify the cause of a kidney stone. Treatment decisions should be based on the clinical diagnosis, kidney function and the individual's medicines and history.

Specimen & collection

Collection notes

The test uses a venous blood sample. Fasting requirements vary by laboratory and by what else is ordered. Tell the clinician about gout medicines, diuretics and recent major dietary or alcohol changes when interpreting a result.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

No. Many people with high serum urate do not have gout, and the level can sometimes be normal during an acute attack. Clinical assessment and, in selected cases, joint-fluid testing are more specific.

In routine clinical use, serum uric acid and serum urate are often used to describe the same measurement of circulating urate.

Yes. Purine-rich foods and alcohol can influence urate, but kidney excretion, genetics and medicines also matter.

The kidneys remove most circulating urate, so kidney function can influence the level and high urate can also be relevant to certain kidney stones.

Requirements vary. Uric acid alone often does not require a long fast, but follow the laboratory instructions for the complete order.

Yes for eligible bookings. Share any prescription and current gout medicine so preparation can be confirmed.
