Kidney Function Test (KFT / RFT)

KFT/RFT is a kidney-related blood-test panel that commonly includes creatinine, urea and an estimated filtration result, with other markers depending on the panel.

About the test

What is KFT / RFT?

Important

Reference ranges and preparation can vary between laboratories and test combinations. Use the instructions and reference interval supplied for your own test order.

A Kidney Function Test (KFT), sometimes called a Renal Function Test (RFT), is a group of blood tests used to assess kidney-related markers and the body’s fluid and electrolyte balance. The exact panel varies, but it commonly includes creatinine and urea, and may include electrolytes such as sodium and potassium. Many laboratory reports also provide an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) calculated from creatinine and patient characteristics.

Kidneys filter waste products from the blood, help regulate water and electrolytes, and have roles in blood pressure, red-cell production and bone-mineral balance. Because kidney function affects several body systems, doctors interpret KFT results with medical history, medicines, hydration and other tests such as urine examination.

A single result is often less informative than the trend over time. Changes in creatinine or eGFR may prompt repeat testing or further assessment, especially when previous results are available for comparison.

Kidney function testing usually combines serum creatinine with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), and may include blood urea nitrogen (BUN), electrolytes or urine testing depending on the clinical question. Creatinine is produced by muscle metabolism and is filtered by the kidneys, while eGFR uses creatinine together with demographic information to estimate filtration.

No single result describes kidney health completely. Creatinine is influenced by muscle mass and some medicines, BUN can change with hydration and protein intake, and eGFR is an estimate rather than a direct measurement. Persistent abnormalities and urine albumin findings are often more informative than one isolated blood result.

What it measures

Common markers included

CreatinineWaste product commonly used in kidney-function assessment.
eGFREstimated filtration result calculated from creatinine and patient factors.
UreaNitrogen-containing waste product measured in many kidney panels.
Uric acidMay be included in some renal or metabolic panels.
ElectrolytesSodium, potassium and other electrolytes may be included depending on the panel.
Why it may be requested

Why might this test be requested?

KFT/RFT may be requested when a clinician is evaluating possible kidney problems, monitoring diabetes or high blood pressure, reviewing dehydration or electrolyte disturbance, checking the effect of certain medicines, or following an existing kidney condition. Kidney tests are also commonly included in broader medical assessments and before some procedures.

The test is not limited to people who have urinary symptoms. Kidney function can change without obvious symptoms, which is why clinicians may use these markers when a person's medical history places them at higher risk.

Understanding results

How are the results interpreted?

Creatinine is a waste product influenced by kidney filtration but also by factors such as muscle mass. eGFR is an estimate derived from creatinine and is interpreted alongside age and clinical context. Urea can be affected by kidney function, hydration, diet and other factors. Electrolytes such as sodium and potassium are assessed because the kidneys help maintain their balance.

Clinicians often compare current results with previous values rather than treating one measurement as a complete answer. Urine tests, blood pressure, imaging or other investigations may be added when needed.

Typical reference values

Common values and expected results

Use your own lab report first

Kidney results are interpreted as a pattern. Creatinine ranges vary with sex and laboratory method, while eGFR is an estimate whose meaning depends on age, persistence over time and other kidney markers such as urine albumin.

MeasurementTypical valueContext
Creatinine — male0.7–1.3 mg/dLCommon adult example from MedlinePlus.
Creatinine — female0.5–0.95 mg/dLCommon adult example from MedlinePlus.
BUN6–20 mg/dLCommon adult example from MedlinePlus.
eGFR≥60 mL/min/1.73m²NIDDK patient tool describes 60 or higher as in the normal range; age and clinical context matter.
Result context

What can affect the result?

Muscle mass and diet

Creatinine can be higher in people with greater muscle mass and can be affected by recent meat intake.

Hydration

Dehydration can raise BUN and sometimes creatinine, while excess fluid can alter concentrations.

Medicines and acute illness

Some medicines and acute illnesses can change kidney markers or kidney function itself.

Important context

What this test cannot tell you on its own

KFT/RFT does not provide a complete diagnosis on its own. Creatinine and eGFR have limitations, and temporary changes can occur with hydration, illness, medicines and other circumstances. Persistent or significant abnormalities need clinical interpretation.

Specimen & collection

Collection notes

KFT/RFT uses a blood sample; urine albumin or routine urine testing may be ordered separately. Fasting is not universally required for kidney function tests alone. Hydration and the full prescription should be considered before collection.

Before collection

How should you prepare?

Confirm the included markers

KFT/RFT panels are not identical at every laboratory.

Ask about preparation

Food, hydration, medicines and additional tests can affect preparation instructions.

Home sample collection

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

In common local usage, KFT and RFT often refer to a kidney/renal function panel. The exact components vary by laboratory, so check what is included.

eGFR estimates how well the kidneys filter blood using creatinine and other information. It helps put the creatinine value into context.

Yes. A value within the laboratory range does not exclude every kidney problem, especially early disease. eGFR, urine albumin and clinical context can add important information.

Yes. Dehydration can raise BUN and may influence creatinine, so the clinician considers hydration when interpreting the pattern.

Not always. Fasting depends on the complete order and laboratory instructions rather than KFT alone.

Yes for eligible bookings. If urine testing is also required, the collection instructions for that specimen should be confirmed in advance.
